Sabic Innovative Plastics Cogeneration

3 MW of cogeneration at a working plastics plant.

The problem we were solving

Sabic's Cobourg facility needed to reduce or eliminate its dependence on the public electrical supply during Global Adjustment peak periods.

We delivered 3 MW of cogeneration power as a turn-key EPC project in collaboration with CEM Engineering, covering civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, controls and utility coordination.

Beyond cutting Global Adjustment fees, with a return on investment between three and four years, the installation gives the plant enough electrical capacity to keep running through temporary outages.

Key Project Components

What the project involved.

  • Turn-key EPC delivery in collaboration with CEM Engineering.
  • Project management and management of safety protocols.
  • Civil construction including concrete foundations.
  • Installation of six 500 kW generators.
  • Installation of three exterior switchgear cabinets.
  • Excavation for underground services, conduit and gas line.
  • Low voltage electrical installation tied into multiple sub-stations.
  • High voltage electrical modifications.
  • Communications cabling and tie-ins.
  • Programming, controls and SCADA.
  • Mechanical installation of natural gas lines.
  • Structural work including the high voltage tower and natural gas line supports.
  • Coordination with local utilities, Enbridge and Hydro One.
Challenges & Solutions

Industrial energy work without stopping production.

The plant kept producing. Foundations, generator placement and tie-ins were sequenced around plant operations and shutdown windows.
Low voltage installation tied into multiple sub-stations and high voltage modifications had to be executed and commissioned without risk to the existing system.
Utility coordination with Enbridge and Hydro One ran in parallel with construction so gas and electrical connections landed on schedule.
Key Takeaways

What this project proved.

  • Cogeneration can pay back in three to four years when Global Adjustment exposure is the driver.
  • One EPC partner across civil, mechanical, electrical and controls removes the gaps between scopes.
  • Industrial energy work is a scheduling discipline as much as an engineering one.

Energy independence for an industrial owner.

This project shows Stolk delivering a complete 3 MW cogeneration installation at an operating industrial facility, from concrete through SCADA.

It reinforces our capability on industrial energy projects where uptime, utility coordination and return on investment all have to be protected.
